Italian Bridal Shower or Nightmare Reality Show!!!!  Part II

By Luna, aka Terri Giosia

The day after the shower I called my mom for the full story never knowing that I’d get an article out of her experience….

I should mention how the invitation stipulates an amount that every woman has to bring…which is standard what was different and learned is the “in” thing now, at the very bottom in teeny font it says where the bride is registered and your encouraged to bring a gift.

Italian Bridal Shower or Nightmare Reality Show!!!!

By Luna, aka Terri Giosia

Bridal showers, a tradition that should be wiped out like the plague was!!!

Men have “stag parties”, women are stuck playing ridiculously embarrassing games, with little or no alcohol and the bride gets to sit under an umbrella for 5 hours and opens and “ooohs and ahhhhhs” over gifts.

Hotness

DAMN it's hot today. Up until today, we had nice, temperate weather and lot of rain to help things grow.

Today we hit a high of 94 degrees Fahrenheit and frankly, I'm not thrilled.

I'm in a pondering mood today.

I'm pondering turning 40 and how freaky that is. I took a "Your Real Age" quiz and based on my lifestyle and attitude I scored 22 years old. Funny, I feel 22.

Your gothness is also pondering whether to expose her white flesh to the sun this year after ten years of religious sun-avoidance.

No matter where I turn, I get mixed messages about what is safest. I'm almost certain, without confirmation of a blood test that I am vitamin D deficient. I drink little milk, don't take and supplements, and avoid the sun like the black death.

I've seen women who have always stayed out of the sun have the creamiest, smoothest skin -at 80 years old.
I've seen women look like an old catcher's mitt at 35.

What to do, what to do?

Genuino

I can almost see the dreamy, gleeful look on my father's face when he would utter the word genuino as he held up a perfectly cured prosciutto or a perfectly ripened San Marzano tomato. Genuino, the Italian word for 'genuine', strikes a deep chord in ex-pat Italians everywhere.

The Merriam-Webster lists the definition of genuine as:

Etymology:
Latin genuinus innate, genuine; akin to Latin gignere to beget — more at kin
Date:
circa 1639

1 a: actually having the reputed or apparent qualities or character b: actually produced by or proceeding from the alleged source or author c: sincerely and honestly felt or experienced d: actual, true 2: free from hypocrisy or pretense : sincere.

Although these definitions are valid and identical to the Italian definitions of the word, there is a certain intangible significance attributed to the Italian word genuino. To Italians having made their homes light-years away from the mountain village from where they came, genuino means not only the true article, or a true, and sincere character. Genuino is the God's-honest truth seen in a child's eyes as they gaze up at the beauty that is their mother.

I was cooking when I came across this forgotten notion. Funny how the label on the side of a can of imported Italian tomatoes can move me to write a blog entry. It's been a little over 8 years since my father died. I still miss him terribly.

Crusader Tours

What was that video playing on the bus in Doctor Who? Why, it was Raffaella Carrà.

I had all her records when I was little. smile

Ma, I’m getting married!!!!  Part III

By Luna, aka Terri Giosia

So in her mind getting married was as natural as breathing. An old memory came flooding back to her of when she 17, right after graduation, she wanted to go to New York and get into acting.

Malbec from Argentina

Finca Los Primos Malbec San Rafael is 100% Malbec from Argentina. It is deep purple. The bouquet is one of light oak and plum fruit. The wine has a rich mouth feel, with some tannins.

I grew up in a house that only served stupefying, 19% alcohol, homemade Zinfadel, Alicante, Moscato, or a combination of any or all of these. When we ate out, my dad would order a bottle of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. I dated a guy who was an accomplished waiter and new all about and taught me about the finer things -and spoiled me with them! I hail from a town that ritualistically celebrated the uncorking of Beaujolais every year. I know absolutely nothing about wine, but I know what I like. Up until tonight, I was strictly a white wine kinda girl with a penchant for Pinot Grigio. Tonight however, Finca Los Primos Malbec made me a convert. I not only like this wine, I love it. In fact, I think I want to have its babies.

It didn't hurt that it was accompanied by a perfectly medium-rare rib eye steak. tongue laugh

  • Being from an Italian dad and a french Canadian mother, I've seen alot at weddings. I'll agree I've seen some degrading things. I remember at my cousins wedding (french side), the men danced with the bride and pinned money to her dress but also the women danced with the groom and pinned money to his tux. Luckily my dad didn't want that at my wedding.
